MARCH Handler Discrimination I
Handler Discrimination is a fun facet of nose work where dogs "find me" - their handlers.
Service Description
Both the United Kennel Club (UKC) Nose Work and American Kennel Club (AKC) Scent Work include a Handler Discrimination (HD) Division, in which the target scent is that of the handler themselves. Handlers will come to the trial with one or more scented articles (such as a cotton glove, cotton ball, or cotton swab) which will then be hidden on the course. The dog will locate the handler’s scent, discriminating it from other human scents, and indicate this find to the handler. At trial, both AKC and UKC Handler Discrimination includes four classes: Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Master. The searches get progressively more difficult as the dog and handler team move up through the classes. This course will introduce you and your dog to the sport of handler discrimination and help you teach her to locate your scent in a variety of situations from cardboard boxes to simulated rooms, complete with furniture! Even if you do not want to compete in handler discrimination trials with your dog, this class will add enrichment to your dog's life and burns off their excess energy (mental activity is four times as tiring as physical activity!). Proof of Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies vaccinations (or titers) are required prior to the start of the first class. Please be sure to review our Policies and Procedures section for more information about what to bring to class, make-up classes, etc.
